On May 9, 2025, the heads of government of Great Britain, France, and Germany meet on a train bound for Ukraine.
The encounter is captured on video — one scene shows their arrival, handshakes, polite words, and finally, them sitting down together at the table.
Immediately after sitting down, Friedrich Merz and Emmanuel Macron each pick up a small object. Both seem to actively hide it from the photographers' view.
Shortly afterwards, Macron discreetly switches the object from one hand to the other and puts it – presumably – in his trouser pocket.
Rumors quickly spread online that the “hidden” objects were illegal substances and paraphernalia. Zoomed-in video clips are being shared on platforms such as X as supposed evidence:

Another video shows a compilation of Macron's public appearances.
Each segment lasts only a few seconds and shows him touching his nose — another supposed “clue.”
Official bodies in Ukraine, France, and Germany respond quickly:

Elysée-Palast
CDU Germany
Several fact checkers are investigating the allegations and have made it clear:
It's all fake; the explosive rumors are untrue.
One X user writes that the object held by Merz could simply have been a wooden skewer for fruit.
